English version

Conclusion. Transfer means moving between a wheelchair and a bed, toilet, car seat or shower chair. It is among the higher-risk moments in wheelchair use: the user leaves a stable seated posture, the centre of gravity moves and the support surface changes. Product influence on transfer safety concentrates in three things. Stability, since the chair carries eccentric load as the user's weight concentrates on one side and must not tip. Immobility, since braking must hold, and a chair that moves causes a fall directly. And clearance, since armrests, footplates and wheels must not obstruct the transfer path. All three are measurable and verifiable.

Methods of transfer. Independent standing transfer, where the user stands and moves, risks instability while standing and chair movement. Independent sliding transfer, moving sideways while seated, risks falling mid-transfer or into a gap. Transfer board use, with a board bridging two seats, risks board slippage and inadequate load capacity. One-person assistance risks carer and user losing balance together. Two-person assistance risks poor coordination. And hoist transfer carries equipment-related risks. Different methods place different demands on the product: sliding transfer requires removable or swing-away armrests and similar seat heights, while standing transfer requires reliable braking and load-bearing armrests.

Examining stability. Stability under eccentric load matters because the user's weight concentrates on one side during transfer, which is more demanding than distributed load. Forward stability matters because the centre of gravity moves forward when standing. Stability under armrest loading matters because force concentrates on the armrest when the user pushes up. Stability under footplate loading matters because users do stand on footplates, though it is not recommended. And test methods apply load at the seat edge, armrest and footplate respectively and assess the tipping threshold. Standing on the footplate is clearly discouraged and nonetheless happens: the product should assess the tipping risk in that situation and the instructions should warn explicitly.

Examining braking. Brake failure during transfer causes a fall directly. Braking force covers whether the chair moves under eccentric load and applied push. Brake operation covers whether the user can apply it and whether the force is appropriate. Brake state indication covers whether the user can confirm that the brake has engaged. Brake position covers whether it is within the user's reach. Braking force after wear covers the reduction as tyres and brake components wear. And braking on different floors covers performance on smooth and wet surfaces. Letting the user confirm engagement is a design consideration: clear visual or tactile feedback is safer than leaving the user to judge by feel. Braking force after wear is a long-term risk: brakes work by pressing against the tyre, and as the tyre wears or loses pressure the force falls markedly through a gradual change.

Factors obstructing transfer. Armrests obstruct the path of a sliding transfer when fixed; removable or swing-away armrests suit transfer better. Footplates obstruct foot movement; swing-away or removable footplates are better. Wheels may obstruct lateral movement, particularly large ones. Seat height relative to the target surface affects difficulty. Seat width affects the distance to be covered. And the gap between chair and target surface is a hazard into which the user may fall. The gap is the hazard in sliding transfers: where a gap exists between chair and bed, the user may fall during the slide, and bridging that gap is one purpose of a transfer board.

Measurable indicators. The tipping threshold under eccentric load, as an angle or force applied at the seat edge. Brake holding force, meaning the push force the applied brake resists. Armrest load capacity in downward and outward directions. The force to remove or swing away an armrest. Seat height and its adjustment range. Transfer path clearance once the armrest is moved. And ease of moving the footplate, covering steps and force. Measured and stated in the documentation, these help professionals judge whether a product suits a particular user's method of transfer.

Verification methods. Static load testing applies load at each position and assesses stability and strength. Brake testing applies push force under eccentric load and measures holding capability. Simulated transfer testing uses a dummy to reproduce load changes through the transfer. And observed transfers, performed by users or therapists, reveal problems in practice. Observation finds what bench testing cannot: a component shape that obstructs hand placement, or a height that makes it hard to apply force.

What the documentation should state. Which transfer methods the product supports. How to move and replace armrests and footplates. Checks before transfer covering brakes and armrest state. How to adjust seat height to match the target surface. Precautions during transfer, including the warning against standing on footplates. And the situations requiring assistance.

How we handle it. In wheelchair testing we suggest treating stability under eccentric load and brake holding force as the priority transfer-related items, since they correspond to the most direct risks during transfer. On braking we suggest re-measuring force after brake components and tyres have worn, since the decline is gradual and users do not readily notice, and that data supports recommended replacement intervals.
