English version

Conclusion. A common misconception about wheelchair cushion fire performance is that buying flame-retardant fabric makes the cushion flame retardant. It does not. A cushion is an assembly: fabric outside, filling inside, generally polyurethane foam or gel, possibly with a liner, a waterproof layer and adhesive between. Burning behaviour is determined by the whole assembly. The fabric may resist flame while the filling burns readily, so once the fabric burns through, the filling ignites. Fabric and filling interact, with molten fabric either feeding the fire or forming a protective layer. And construction matters, since seams, zips and edge finishing may all be weak points. The subject of testing must therefore be a composite specimen, and a result from fabric alone cannot represent the cushion.

What to test. Fabric alone does not represent the cushion, reflecting only the fabric. Filling alone does not represent it either, reflecting only the filling. A fabric and filling composite does represent it, reflecting the actual construction. And a complete cushion represents it most closely. The fabric-over-filling composite is the standard subject, simulating the layered structure of an actual cushion so that the result is representative.

Requirements for specimen composition. Materials must match the actual product in brand, specification and supplier. Thickness of filling must match. Layers must match, including liners and waterproof layers. Dimensions must follow the test method. Conditioning must equilibrate the specimen under specified conditions before testing. And orientation must respect the fabric's face and any directional pattern. The waterproof layer is readily omitted: many cushions include a waterproof liner of polyurethane or polyethylene film whose burning behaviour affects the overall result.

Selecting the ignition source. Fire performance testing generally uses sources of different energy. A smouldering source simulates a cigarette, with low energy over a long period. A small flame source simulates a match, with moderate energy over a short period. A larger source simulates more severe ignition. And the choice rests on the product's environment and risk assessment. Results from smouldering and flaming sources may differ: some materials resist open flame well while being susceptible to smouldering, which can continue for tens of minutes unnoticed, so both sources need examining.

Observation and judgement. Whether ignition occurs. Duration of flaming after the source is removed. Duration of smouldering without flame. Extent of damage, being the size of the charred and destroyed area. Mass loss from burning. Molten drips, which may ignite material below. And smoke, with density and toxicity examined in some contexts. Molten drips deserve attention for wheelchair cushions: the cushion sits beneath the user, and drips fall towards the floor and the user's lower limbs.

Re-testing after laundering and ageing. This part is readily overlooked in practice. Durability of flame retardance matters because finish-applied treatments may wash out. Laundering cycles should follow the product's expected service. Laundering conditions cover the effects of temperature, detergent and disinfectant. Ageing re-testing covers performance after light, heat and humidity exposure. And wear matters because abraded fabric thins. Disinfectant effects deserve consideration in healthcare and care settings: chlorine-based disinfectants among others may affect flame-retardant finishes, and disinfection frequency in such settings is high.

Factors affecting the result. Filling type matters, since ordinary foam, flame-retardant foam, gel and air cushions burn very differently. Fabric mass and construction affect how long burn-through takes. Interlayer adhesive may itself be combustible. Edges and seams matter through the thread material and edge finishing. And trim including zips, hook-and-loop fastening and labels contributes. Thread is a readily overlooked detail: combustible thread lets fire spread along the seam even where the fabric itself resists flame.

Balancing against other properties. Fire performance cannot be considered in isolation. Balance against breathability, since flame-retardant finishes may reduce it. Balance against comfort, since flame-retardant materials may be firmer. Balance against biocompatibility, since flame retardants require consideration of skin contact safety. Balance against durability, since finishes may affect fabric strength. And balance against pressure relief, since flame-retardant fillings may distribute pressure differently. The balance against pressure relief matters especially for wheelchair cushions: the cushion's primary function is pressure distribution and pressure ulcer prevention, and flame retardance must not come at the cost of it.

How we handle it. For cushion fire performance testing we require composite specimens or complete cushions rather than fabric alone, since fabric-alone results do not represent the cushion. We confirm the specimen's full layer structure including liners and waterproof layers, which affect the result materially while clients frequently do not mention them. And for washable cushions we suggest re-testing after laundering cycles, particularly for products relying on finish-applied flame retardance, since depletion of the treatment through repeated washing and disinfection is real.
