English version

Conclusion. Wheelchair production involves two principal inspections: in-process and final. Many manufacturers confuse their relationship, producing two problems. Duplication tests the same item in both places, wasting resources. Omission leaves some items covered in neither, so problems flow through to the end. The key to sorting this out is recognising that the two have different purposes. In-process inspection controls the operation, confirming that this step was done correctly and may flow to the next, concerning itself with whether the operation's output meets requirements. Final inspection confirms the product, establishing that it meets shipping requirements, concerning itself with the whole product's function, safety and appearance. One rule decides: items that cannot be tested after assembly, or that are costly to test then, must be tested in process.

Comparing the two. In-process inspection examines semi-finished items and operation outputs, final inspection the whole product. In-process controls the operation, final confirms the product. In-process occurs after each key operation, final after assembly. In-process covers operation characteristics, final whole-product characteristics. In-process uses first-article plus patrol checks, final unit-by-unit or sampling. And in-process non-conformance means rework or segregation, final means repair or scrapping. Non-conformance costs less to handle in process: a problem found during an operation affects only that operation, while one found after assembly may require dismantling.

What in-process inspection covers. Welding requires weld appearance, welding parameters and, where relevant, sampled weld quality, and must be inspected before painting since welds cannot be examined afterwards. Tube fabrication requires cut length, bend angle and radius, and hole positions. Surface treatment requires pre-treatment condition, coating thickness and adhesion, and adhesion is awkward to measure on a finished product so is better measured in process. Frame assembly requires key dimensions, symmetry and parallelism. Component pre-assembly requires freedom of rotation, clearance and fit. Sewing requires stitch length, seam strength and seam quality. And electrical assembly requires correct wiring, insulation and earth continuity, since wiring is awkward to inspect once the covers are on. Weld inspection before painting and wiring inspection before enclosure are the archetypal must-inspect-in-process items, because the opportunity is gone once the operation passes.

What final inspection covers. Appearance and marking, covering the whole product's appearance and the completeness and correctness of markings. Dimensions of the whole product. Mass of the whole product. Function, covering folding, adjustment, braking, steering and the operation of each functional component. Electrical safety, covering leakage and insulation on powered products. Electrical function, covering power-up, speed control, charge indication, charging and protective functions. Stability, sampling static stability. Braking effectiveness. And accompanying documents, covering instructions, conformity certificates and warranty cards. Final inspection concentrates on characteristics only the whole product exhibits: individually conforming components do not guarantee a conforming product, and assembly quality and inter-component fit can be verified only on the whole.

Linking the two. Avoid duplication, since items confirmed in process and unaffected by later operations need not be repeated. Avoid omission by establishing which inspection owns each characteristic. Carry records forward so that in-process records trace to the finished product. Handle non-conformance so that in-process failures do not reach final inspection. And feed information back so that problems found at final inspection reach the responsible operation. Assigning each characteristic to an owning inspection is how omission is avoided: list every characteristic needing control and assign each a responsible inspection point, and anything unassigned is an omission.

First article and patrol. In-process inspection generally takes two forms. First-article inspection examines the first item of each batch, changeover or adjustment comprehensively, confirming the setup is correct. Patrol inspection samples during production at a set frequency, confirming the process is stable. First-article inspection earns its place by catching setup errors promptly: without it, a wrong setup may mean a whole batch made wrongly.

Self, successive and dedicated inspection. Self-inspection has operators check their own work, costing least with the fastest feedback. Successive inspection has the next operation check the previous one, exploiting its sensitivity to upstream quality. Dedicated inspection uses inspectors, offering the best independence. Use all three together, with self and successive inspection covering routine work and dedicated inspection covering key points and sampling.

Common configuration problems. Too many items at final inspection, piling up work that belongs in process. In-process inspection as a formality, signed but not performed. Key operations without inspection points, with welding and electrical assembly omitted. Records that do not trace, failing to correspond to products. And missing feedback, with problems found at final inspection not returning to the operation.

How we handle it. Where manufacturers commission testing we distinguish which data suit process control and which belong to final or type testing. For weld quality, coating adhesion and material identity we suggest submission after the corresponding operation rather than waiting for a complete product, since sampling from a whole product is difficult and costly. Where final or type testing finds a problem we provide failure information in as much detail as we can, to help locate the responsible operation.
