English version

Conclusion. The reliability of test data rests on the accuracy of measuring equipment, and that accuracy is not permanent: transducers drift, mechanisms wear and electronic components age. Calibration periodically establishes the relationship between the equipment's indication and the true value and corrects it where necessary. For equipment that is not calibrated, the relationship between measured data and truth is unknown. This matters practically for anyone using a report: how far the figures can be relied upon depends partly on the calibration status of the measuring equipment.

Equipment involved. Force and load equipment covers tensile and compression machines, force gauges and weights. Dimensional equipment covers callipers, micrometers, tapes and gauges. Mass equipment covers balances and platform scales. Angular equipment covers inclinometers and tilt platforms. Time and speed equipment covers timers and speed measurement. Temperature and humidity equipment covers meters and environmental chambers. Electrical equipment covers multimeters, leakage testers and dielectric strength testers. Pressure equipment covers gauges and transducers. And rotation and distance equipment covers tachometers and distance counters. The tilt platform is key equipment in wheelchair stability testing, since the accuracy of its angular indication and level reference determines the reliability of stability data directly.

Elements of calibration. Traceability requires calibration against a higher-level standard, ultimately traceable to national or international references. Calibration interval follows the equipment's stability and intensity of use. Calibration range must cover the range actually used. Calibration points should span the range. Handling of results means continuing to use equipment whose indication error falls within tolerance and adjusting or withdrawing equipment that does not. And a calibration certificate records the results and uncertainty. Covering the range in use is a practical requirement: equipment accurate near its calibration points offers no assurance when used outside the calibrated range.

Intermediate checks. Between calibrations, equipment may already have drifted. Intermediate checks confirm during the interval that the equipment remains sound. Methods use reference artefacts, reference samples or comparison with other equipment. Frequency follows the equipment's stability and importance. And where an anomaly is found, data from the interval must be reviewed and the equipment recalibrated. Reviewing data from the interval is the important action after finding an anomaly, since everything measured since the last satisfactory check may be affected and requires assessment.

Effect on data. Indication error is the systematic deviation between reading and true value. Uncertainty contribution makes equipment one source of measurement uncertainty. Drift is change within the calibration interval. And out-of-range use introduces uncertainty beyond the calibrated range. Systematic deviation acts directionally: if the equipment reads high, every result reads high, and nonconforming product may be judged conforming or the reverse. That is more dangerous than random error, because repetition does not cancel it.

How users can check. As a report user, consider the laboratory's accreditation status, since accreditation involves requirements on equipment management. Consider the equipment information in the report, meaning whether the equipment used is listed. Consider calibration status, meaning whether it was within its interval. Request calibration certificates where key data warrant it. And keep the checking proportionate, deciding by the importance of the data rather than demanding everything. Listing the equipment used in a report is good practice, making the data's provenance traceable.

Relevance to in-house testing. Companies testing in-house face the same equipment management questions. Equipment selection must match accuracy to the measurement requirement. Calibration must be arranged, either externally or in-house, the latter requiring traceable standards. Intervals follow intensity of use and stability. Intermediate checks confirm status within the interval. And records must be retained, covering certificates and check records. Matching accuracy to requirement is the basic consideration in selection: equipment of inadequate accuracy cannot resolve meaningful differences, while excessive accuracy wastes money.

Common problems. Equipment overdue for calibration, leaving reliability unassured. Calibration range not covering the range in use, so that measurement occurs in an uncalibrated region. No intermediate checks, leaving drift undetected. No recalibration after repair, when repair may change the equipment's characteristics. And incomplete records, leaving equipment status untraceable. Use these five as checkpoints in equipment management.

How we handle it. Our measuring equipment is calibrated on schedule with intermediate checks, and our reports list key equipment and its calibration status, making the data's provenance traceable. Where clients have particular requirements, such as copies of calibration certificates, we can supply them, since they form part of the evidence chain for data reliability and clients are entitled to see it.
