English version

Conclusion. A wheelchair entering a vehicle presents two entirely different situations. In the first, the empty chair is transported: the user transfers to a vehicle seat and the chair travels in the vehicle, folded or otherwise. Here the chair is cargo, and the requirement is secure stowage so that it does not become a projectile under heavy braking or in a collision. In the second, the user rides seated in the chair, which then serves as a vehicle seat and must perform a seat's safety function, involving crash safety at a far higher level of requirement. Most ordinary wheelchairs are unsuitable for the second situation, and where that is not clearly marked, users may misuse them with serious consequences.

Differences between the situations. Transporting an empty chair concerns the projectile risk, requires securement against movement, places general demands on structure, does not involve restraint systems, is verified through securement strength and needs general instructions. Occupied use concerns injury to the user, requires securement capable of carrying crash loads, demands structural integrity under crash conditions, requires compatibility with vehicle restraints, is verified by crash testing and needs explicit suitability marking. Crash testing is the key verification for occupied use, establishing whether structure, securement points and restraint protect the user under crash deceleration.

Securement point requirements. Chairs intended for occupied use need purpose-designed securement points. Position must suit connection of securement devices and carry load sensibly. Strength must withstand crash loads, far above normal use. Marking should make the points conspicuous and identifiable. Compatibility should suit common securement systems. Number is generally several, distributed front and rear. And the connection to structure must transmit load into the main frame rather than into a local component alone. Marking is practical: a driver or carer securing a chair needs to find the points quickly, and unclear marking can lead to securing at the wrong location, where strength may be inadequate.

Working with restraint systems. For occupied use, the user needs protection from the vehicle's restraint system. The belt path must allow the belt to pass correctly across the pelvis and chest without being obstructed or diverted by chair components. Armrests may divert the belt path. Backrest height and shape affect shoulder belt position. The chair's own positioning straps cannot substitute for vehicle belts, which must be stated explicitly. And head support matters for head and neck protection in a collision. The point about positioning straps must be explicit: straps on a wheelchair exist to maintain posture and are designed neither in strength nor in path for crash loading, and a user or carer assuming restraint is already provided and omitting the seat belt faces serious risk.

Crash-related examination. Structural integrity covers whether frame, seat and securement points remain intact under crash conditions. User excursion covers how far the user moves during the crash. Restraint effectiveness covers whether the system limits the user effectively. Component detachment covers whether footplates, armrests and accessories come loose and become hazards. Sharp features cover structures exposed after the crash. And secondary impact covers the user striking chair components. Component detachment deserves attention: removable parts including footplates, armrests, trays and oxygen cylinders may detach in a collision and endanger both the user and other occupants.

Chairs unsuitable for occupied use. Most ordinary chairs are unsuitable, and the handling follows. Mark the product explicitly as not for use as a seat in a vehicle. Explain correct use in the instructions. Recommend the alternative of transferring to a vehicle seat. And explain correct securement of the empty chair during transport. Marking on the product is more effective than the instructions, because drivers and carers see it at the moment of use.

Examining empty chair transport. Even transporting an empty chair carries requirements. Securement feasibility covers whether the chair has structure to secure. Folded stability covers whether it unfolds by itself. Weight and handling cover the burden of lifting in and out. Size covers whether it fits the vehicle space. And component retention covers whether removable parts scatter. Self-unfolding is a real problem: where the folding lock is unreliable, vibration during transport can open the chair, occupying space or causing damage.

What the documentation should state. Whether the chair may be occupied in a vehicle, stated as a plain yes or no. Where the securement points are, if occupied use is permitted. Which securement systems are compatible. How the restraint system should be used, including correct belt paths. How to secure the empty chair for transport. And how to handle removable components, including whether they must be removed before transport.

How we handle it. In wheelchair testing we check the marking on occupied use in vehicles, since misuse has serious consequences and marking is the principal preventive measure. For products designed for occupied use, securement point strength verification is a standing item; for products that are not, we confirm that the prohibition is clearly marked on the product. We also attend to transport-related items on empty chairs, covering folding locks and component retention, since those arise every day in ordinary use.
