English version
Conclusion. For users who go out, a wheelchair is folded, lifted into a vehicle, lifted out and unfolded every day. Where that is inconvenient, the practical consequence is that the user goes out less, and the product's value diminishes. Convenience covers several aspects: the folding operation, in number of steps, force required and whether tools are needed; folded dimensions, meaning whether it fits a boot; weight, meaning the physical burden of lifting; ease of carrying, covering handles and whether the balance is sensible; and unfolding, covering whether it is equally convenient and locks reliably. All of these can be measured and compared.
Measurable indicators. The number of folding steps covers how many actions are needed. Folding force covers the effort at each step. Folding time covers how long it takes once practised. Folded dimensions cover length, width and height. Whole product weight covers the chair with and without removable parts. Heaviest single component covers what must be lifted at once after separation. Handle position and centre of gravity cover whether it balances when lifted. And unfolding lock reliability covers whether it can be left unlocked. The heaviest single component reflects the lifting burden better than whole product weight, since detachable design allows lifting in stages.
Examining the folding operation. The number and order of steps should be few and intuitive. The force at each step should lie within the target users' capability. The posture required matters, covering whether stooping or crouching is needed and whether the direction of effort is awkward. One-handed operation of some steps is valuable. Parts requiring removal matter, covering whether footplates or cushions must come off before folding. Tools should not be needed. And feedback should confirm when folding is complete. Requiring parts to be removed before folding markedly reduces convenience: removed parts must be carried and stored separately and are easily lost. A design folding directly without removal is more practical.
Examining carrying. Weight covers the whole product and each component. Handles cover position, shape, grip comfort and strength. Balance covers whether it hangs level when lifted, since imbalance causes it to swing or tip. Grip points cover whether suitable holds exist besides the handle. Sharp corners and protrusions cover whether carrying catches or injures the hand. And loading into a vehicle covers whether the shape suits and whether suitable purchase points exist. Balance when lifted is a practical assessment: where the folded centre of gravity sits away from the handle, the chair tilts or swings when lifted and the user must steady it with the other hand, adding to the burden.
Significance of folded dimensions. Boot compatibility depends on the dimensional limits of common vehicles. All three dimensions matter, since the smallest determines whether it passes through a given opening. Regularity of shape matters, since an irregular shape may occupy more space than the dimensions suggest. Stackability matters where several chairs are stored. And storage space at home matters. Give three-dimensional folded dimensions rather than a description such as compact when folded, so that users can judge whether it suits their vehicle.
Unfolding and locking. Ease of unfolding covers steps and force. Lock reliability is essential, since a chair that folds during use has serious consequences. Lock indication covers whether the user can confirm engagement. Prevention of use when unlocked is the ideal, with the structure not permitting normal use unlocked. And lock mechanism durability covers reliability after repeated cycles. Preventing use when unlocked is the key safety design point: relying on the user to check is weaker than a structure that does not allow it, such as a seat that cannot bear load until locked.
Common design problems. Too many folding steps, requiring several actions every time. Excessive force, particularly for users with limited upper limb strength. Required part removal, adding steps and risk of loss. Poor handle position, giving unbalanced lifting. Self-unfolding after folding, from unreliable locking. Irregular folded shape, occupying more space than expected. And pinch risk, from entrapment points during folding. Pinching during folding is a real injury risk: fingers can be caught between moving parts, and the design should avoid or guard against it while the instructions warn.
Verification methods. Force measurement records the actual force at each step. Time measurement records completion time for a practised operator. Dimension and weight measurement records folded dimensions and component weights. User testing asks target users to perform the operation and observes problems. Durability testing checks reliability after repeated folding cycles. And entrapment assessment evaluates gaps during the folding motion. User testing reveals what designers do not anticipate: a step beyond the hand strength of some users, or a position a seated user cannot reach.
How we handle it. In wheelchair testing, folding-related items cover operating force, folded dimensions, lock reliability and entrapment risk during folding. For products sold on portability we suggest stating component weights and three-dimensional folded dimensions as explicit performance parameters, since specific figures are more useful to users than a description such as light and easy to fold. On durability we suggest re-measuring lock reliability after folding cycles, since lock failure has serious consequences and mechanism wear is gradual.
