English version
Conclusion. Wheelchair parameters look self-evident: seat width, seat depth, load capacity, range. Standards define these terms precisely, however, and the definitions may differ from everyday understanding. Misunderstanding has real consequences. Data become incomparable, when two manufacturers state the same parameter on different understandings and figures that look very different may in fact be equivalent. Testing goes wrong, when measurement follows a mistaken understanding and the data do not meet the standard's requirement. Purchasers misjudge, reading parameters by everyday understanding that does not match reality. And documentation errs, when stated parameters do not mean what the standard's definition means.
Dimensional terms that confuse. Seat width is commonly taken as the outer width of the seat while standards generally mean the effective seat width or the distance between armrest inner faces. Seat depth is commonly taken as the overall fore-aft length while standards generally mean the effective depth from backrest to seat front edge. Seat height is commonly taken as seat surface to floor while the measuring point and condition are specified, including whether the cushion is fitted. Backrest height is commonly taken as overall height while standards measure effective height from the seat surface. Overall width is commonly taken as frame width while standards generally mean the widest point including wheels. Overall length is commonly taken as frame length while standards generally include footplates in the position of use. And folded dimensions are stated inconsistently between manufacturers and need the disassembly state described. Whether the cushion is included is the common disagreement on seat height: the difference can be several centimetres, which matters practically for transfers and fit.
Load-related terms. Maximum user weight refers to the occupant's own weight. Maximum load may include the occupant plus carried items. Rated load is the load used in testing and may differ from both. And test load is what is actually applied in testing, generally the rated load multiplied by a factor. Confusion between these is a real problem: stating a load capacity of one hundred kilograms leaves the user unable to judge whether it means occupant weight or includes belongings.
Performance terms. Range varies greatly with test conditions of load, surface, speed and temperature. Maximum speed depends on whether unladen or at rated load, on the level or under specified conditions. Gradient capability depends on whether expressed as an angle or a percentage, sustained or momentary, and at what load. Obstacle height depends on whether negotiated directly or with technique, and on the form of the obstacle. And braking distance depends on speed, load, gradient and surface. Whether gradient capability is expressed as an angle or a percentage confuses readily: the same slope carries entirely different numbers in each, and omitting the unit invites misreading.
Structural terms. Rear wheel and drive wheel coincide on manual chairs while powered chairs may be front or mid-wheel drive. Footplates and legrests support the feet and the lower legs respectively. Armrests and side panels are named differently between products. Backrest angle requires a stated reference. And seat angle, the inclination of the seat relative to horizontal, requires the sign convention to be clear. The sign of seat angle needs stating, since forward and rearward tilt mean entirely different things to the user.
Consequences of confusion. In testing, a mistaken understanding sets measuring points or conditions wrongly and the data do not conform. In comparison, parameters stated on different definitions make comparison meaningless. In procurement, unclear tender parameter definitions leave bidders interpreting for themselves. In use, users choose on everyday understanding and find the product unsuitable. And in documentation, instruction parameters and report parameters follow different definitions.
How to check. Consult the standard's terms and definitions section, which most standards have. Read the measurement method, which conveys meaning beyond the definition. Look at the illustrations, which generally show measuring points clearly. Check the definitions in the report, which should state how parameters were measured. And unify understanding internally within the company. Looking at illustrations is the quickest way to understand dimensional terms, since they mark the start and end points of the measurement directly.
Handling it in documentation. Define parameters explicitly by stating the measurement method or citing the standard's definition. State conditions for performance parameters. State units, angles and percentages especially. State the condition, such as whether seat height includes the cushion. And keep it consistent across instructions, marking, marketing material and reports. Stating the measurement method alongside a parameter looks verbose while removing ambiguity, which helps both users and purchasers.
How we handle it. In reports we state the measurement method or the standard clause relied upon for each parameter, since one parameter name can denote different quantities under different understandings. Where a client's stated parameter differs from our measurement we first check whether the difference is one of definition rather than judging nonconformity, since it is often merely a difference in measurement convention. We suggest that clients state their own definitions of key parameters when submitting, so that any divergence from the standard definition can be clarified in advance.
