English version

Conclusion. Many wheelchair tests are sensitive to environmental conditions. Temperature affects tyre hardness, grease viscosity, battery capacity and plastic properties. Humidity affects friction, material moisture content and electrical measurement. The test site affects results through floor material, flatness and friction coefficient. And atmospheric pressure affects tyre pressure and certain measurements. The same chair tested in winter and in summer may give different push force, range and braking distance, and without recorded conditions those differences cannot be explained and the data cannot be compared.

Effects of temperature. Tyres harden in cold, changing both rolling resistance and grip. Lubricants thicken in cold, increasing rotational resistance. Batteries lose capacity markedly in cold, shortening range. Plastics embrittle in cold and soften in heat. Electronic components shift in parameters with temperature. And hydraulic components change with fluid viscosity. Affected tests include push force, range, braking, impact and any mechanical testing involving plastics or rubber. Battery range is the most temperature-sensitive: ambient and cold range can differ greatly, so range data must state the test temperature.

Effects of humidity. Friction coefficients fall at most interfaces when damp. Braking is affected through friction between brake and tyre. Material moisture content changes the properties of some plastics and textiles. And electrical measurements of insulation resistance and leakage current are affected. Affected tests include braking, slip resistance, electrical safety and mechanical testing of hygroscopic materials. The humidity sensitivity of braking data deserves attention, particularly for friction brakes.

Effects of the test site. Floor material determines the friction coefficient. Flatness affects push force and stability measurement. Levelness matters, since a slight gradient affects push and stability data. And surface condition covers cleanliness and the presence of dust or moisture. Affected tests include push force, braking distance, stability and range. Levelness is critical in stability testing: any deviation of the test platform adds directly to the measured tipping angle.

Items requiring condition control. Push force requires control of temperature and floor material and flatness. Range requires temperature, floor, load and speed. Braking requires temperature, humidity and floor. Stability requires levelness. Impact and drop require temperature, which affects material toughness. Electrical safety requires temperature and humidity. Mechanical properties require temperature and specimen conditioning. And material testing requires temperature and humidity conditioning. Specimen conditioning is a necessary step in material testing: plastics and textiles change with moisture content and must equilibrate under specified conditions before measurement.

Recording conditions. Record temperature, humidity, pressure, site conditions and time. Record before and after each test, and periodically during long tests. Record at the test location rather than elsewhere in the laboratory. Record deviations where conditions fall outside the specified range, with the handling. And associate conditions with each data set. The recording location matters practically: temperature can vary across a large test hall, and the measuring point should be near the test position.

Handling deviations. Within range, proceed normally and record actual conditions. Slight deviation should be recorded and its effect assessed, with correction where appropriate. Marked deviation should prompt adjusting conditions and retesting, or stating the deviation and its effect. And where control is impossible, some tests simply cannot proceed until conditions are met. Corrections need a basis: some measurements have defined correction methods, such as correcting temperature rise for ambient, and those are acceptable, whereas unfounded estimated corrections introduce fresh uncertainty.

Considerations when interpreting data. Check conditions before comparing data, since results under different conditions are not directly comparable. Consider whether the test conditions represent actual use. Note the absence of extreme conditions, since ambient data say nothing about behaviour at extremes. And consider whether conditions affect the conclusion, stating so where a different condition might change it. That ambient data do not represent extremes matters in procurement and use: the range in a report was measured at ambient, and actual winter range will fall below that figure.

How we handle it. In wheelchair testing we record site temperature and humidity and state them in the report, since they affect several results and readers need them to judge applicability. For condition-sensitive items including range, braking and push force we suggest stating test conditions explicitly and, where the client needs it, adding data under other conditions, such as cold-weather range, which has practical value for products aimed at cold regions. For material testing we condition specimens as specified, since unconditioned data are not comparable with data obtained under standard conditions.
