English version
Conclusion. Outdoor powered wheelchairs meet conditions far more varied than indoor ones: rain, snow, muddy water, airborne dust, washing down and standing water. Stated protection ratings frequently fall short of actual protection, for several reasons. The rating may describe a component rather than the whole product, as when a controller is rated but the chair is not. Sealing after assembly may be unverified, so that conforming components leave joints and cable entries uncertain. Sealing degrades in service as seals age and repeated opening takes its toll. And weak points remain local, with most of the product well protected while particular places such as charging sockets and connectors are not. The whole product's actual protection is set by its weakest point, not by the highest-rated component.
Locations to examine. The controller risks malfunction from water ingress, with attention to enclosure sealing and keys. The joystick risks loss of control, with attention to sealing at the base of the stick. The battery compartment risks short circuit, with attention to door sealing and drainage. The motor risks damage, with attention to shaft seals and terminations. The charging socket risks abnormal charging, with attention to the cover's sealing and retention. Connectors risk poor contact, with attention to sealing and protection. Cable entries risk water tracking along cables, with attention to sealing and routing. And the display risks impaired visibility, with attention to bezel sealing. Water tracking along cables is a readily overlooked path: water runs along the cable sheath and enters an otherwise well-sealed cavity at the cable entry, and routing design such as a drip loop blocks it effectively.
Examining dust protection. Dust causes wear in rotating parts, impairs contact in electrical parts and impedes cooling where it accumulates. Examine motors, bearings, controllers, cooling surfaces and rotating joints. Test by exposure in a dust-laden environment for a specified period. Inspect afterwards by dismantling to check internal accumulation. And verify function afterwards. Dust on cooling surfaces matters noticeably over long service: it reduces cooling efficiency and may push controller or motor temperature rise beyond expectation.
Examining water protection. Water takes different forms. Vertical dripping simulates light rain. Angled dripping simulates rain with wind. Spraying simulates heavier rain. Jetting simulates splashing from all directions. Powerful jetting simulates washing down. And immersion simulates passing through standing water. Choose from the product's expected environment: an outdoor chair used for commuting needs at least spraying and jetting, and immersion if wading is claimed.
Points during testing. Powered state matters, since the product should be operating or in the specified state, because temperature difference affects pressure inside sealed cavities. Temperature matters, since a product that has warmed in use and then meets cold water develops a partial vacuum as the internal air contracts, which can draw water in. Posture should be covered, since seal faces load differently at different seat and backrest angles. Testing during motion covers sealing of rotating parts while moving. And the charging socket should be tested both covered and uncovered. The partial vacuum from cooling is a real ingress mechanism, which is why testing should occur near realistic temperatures, since cold testing may not reveal it.
Verification after testing. Finishing the test does not finish the judgement. Inspect externally for visible signs of ingress. Dismantle and inspect internally for water or moisture. Measure insulation resistance for any reduction. Verify that functions operate. Observe subsequently, since problems such as corrosion and poor contact may appear after a period. And use indicators, placing moisture-sensitive paper at key locations to show whether water entered. Subsequent observation is genuinely necessary: a small quantity of water may not affect function at the time while corrosion and poor contact emerge days later.
Common weak points. Charging socket covers, whose seals age, which do not close fully, and which users forget to close. Joystick bases, where repeated movement fatigues and splits the bellows. Keys and membranes, where membrane panel edges lift. Connectors, where non-waterproof types are used outdoors. Battery compartment doors, where seals are insufficiently compressed or have aged. Enclosure joints, where seals were fitted incorrectly or under-compressed at assembly. And absent drainage, where water that enters cannot escape and collects. Drainage deserves consideration: preventing ingress entirely is difficult, and providing paths for water that does enter to escape is more practical than pursuing absolute sealing.
Examining long-term performance. Seal ageing from light, temperature and ozone. Sealing after repeated opening of battery doors and charging covers. Sealing after vibration, which may displace seals or distort enclosures. And the effect of cleaning agents and disinfectants on seals. Re-test protection performance after ageing or durability testing, since conformity when new does not mean conformity after two years of use.
How we handle it. For dust and water protection we suggest testing with the product warm after operating under power, since the partial vacuum from cooling is a real ingress mechanism that cold testing may not reveal. We dismantle and inspect afterwards rather than only checking function, since a small ingress may not affect function at the time while being the starting point for later corrosion and poor contact. We place moisture-indicating material in key cavities, making it straightforward to judge whether water entered and where from. And for products claimed suitable outdoors we suggest re-testing protection after ageing or vibration, since seal performance declines with time and use.
