English version

Conclusion. When a manufacturer has several models to test, the instinct is to submit every one. Before scheduling, however, one thing should come first: a coverage justification. Analysing the differences between models, selecting representatives for complete testing and arguing that the rest are covered can substantially reduce the number of models actually needing testing, shortening the schedule and lowering cost. Only then should the models genuinely requiring testing be scheduled, considering parallel and serial working, sample preparation and dependencies between items.

Preparation before scheduling. A model list with difference analysis establishes where they differ. A coverage justification establishes which models are covered. An item list establishes what each model needing testing requires. Duration estimates establish roughly how long each item takes. Sample availability establishes how many of each model can be supplied and when. And priorities establish which models are urgent and which can follow. Priorities are an important input: a model chasing a market window should go first with the others following.

Differences in item duration. Dimensions and appearance are short. Function and performance are short to moderate. Electrical safety is moderate. Electromagnetic compatibility is moderate. Environmental testing is moderate to long. Fatigue durability is long. And material and chemical testing is moderate to long. Fatigue durability usually governs the schedule, so it should start first and run in parallel with everything else.

Parallel against serial. Fully serial completes one model before the next, needing few samples and taking a long time. Fully parallel runs every model together, taking less time and needing many samples and much capacity. Partial parallel starts long-duration items in parallel and runs the rest serially. Item-level parallel runs different items on one model concurrently where capacity allows. And grouping runs similar models together, serially within groups and in parallel between them. Partial parallel suits most situations: start fatigue durability on every model requiring testing simultaneously and run the rest serially by model.

Coordinating samples. Total requirement covers samples needed across models and items. Delivery timing covers whether samples arrive on schedule. Sample reuse covers how one sample moves between items. Destructive items should come last to maximise sample use. And spare samples cover accidental damage. Sample delivery timing is often the real constraint: however good the schedule, work cannot proceed without samples, and sample preparation should be part of the plan.

Coordinating capacity. Equipment occupancy matters, since some equipment runs one test at a time. Long-duration items occupy equipment for extended periods, particularly fatigue testing. Personnel must be scheduled. Environmental chamber capacity limits batch sizes. And other clients' work must be coordinated, since a laboratory runs several commissions simultaneously. Establish the laboratory's capacity when commissioning, particularly whether equipment for long-duration items is available, since that determines whether the plan can proceed.

Phased submission. Where samples or time do not permit submitting everything at once, phase it. Phase by priority, sending urgent models first. Phase by item, sending long-duration items first. Phase by model, sending representatives first with others following. Maintain consistency across phases, with samples from the same batch, or comparability suffers. And record each phase clearly, covering samples and items. Sending representative models first is sensible: obtaining their data first allows remediation before the other models are submitted, if problems appear.

Common scheduling problems. No coverage justification, testing unnecessary models. Long-duration items started too late, becoming the bottleneck. Sample preparation falling behind, defeating the schedule. No allowance for retesting, leaving no margin when something fails. And no account of laboratory capacity, assuming work can start at any time. Omitting retest time is a common planning failure: scheduling on the assumption of passing first time leaves the whole plan disrupted by a single failure. Build retest margin into the schedule.

How we handle it. For multi-model work we review the difference list first and discuss the feasibility of a coverage justification with the client, since coverage can substantially reduce the models needing testing. On scheduling we place long-duration items such as fatigue and environmental testing first and state approximate durations and equipment availability, so that the client can plan. Where models differ in priority we can phase the work so that urgent models produce reports first.
