English version

Conclusion. When hospitals or institutions purchase wheelchairs, suppliers typically provide a stack of test reports running to dozens of pages that no buyer can read through. Five places are worth a few minutes' attention: the basic information on the cover, the sample information, the test basis, the measured data, and the laboratory's accreditation statement. Checking those five reveals most of the problems a report can have: that it does not cover this product, that it has expired, that the wrong standard was applied, that the data do not support the claims, or that the laboratory lacks the relevant accreditation.

First: cover information. The report number, used for later verification. The client's name, and whether it is the supplier or an affiliate; where a different company appears, ask about the relationship. The sample name and model, and whether it is the model you are buying, noting that model suffixes matter since A and A-1 may be different products. The report date, for currency. And the report type, whether type testing, commissioned testing or something else, since coverage and representativeness differ. The distinction between commissioned and type testing deserves attention: commissioned testing generally covers only the items the client specified and may not span all applicable requirements, while type testing usually covers more completely.

Second: sample information. This reveals the most. Sample provenance, whether submitted by the client or drawn by sampling; submitted samples are selected by the supplier and are less representative. Sample quantity, meaning how many units were tested. Build date and batch number, showing when the sample was made; a report from long ago may not represent current production. Sample condition, covering whether new, complete and in what configuration. And manufacturing site, and whether it matches the site that will supply. Look closely at configuration: the tested sample may be in base configuration while what you are buying carries additional accessories, and mass, stability and range may all differ.

Third: test basis. The standard number and year, showing which standard and edition; an old edition deserves attention since the standard may have been revised. Whether the standard is applicable, testing a wheelchair to a wheelchair standard being correct while an unrelated standard cited for some item warrants a question. Whether all applicable requirements are covered, checked against the standard's item list for omissions. And any deviations, which the report should state where items were not tested or methods adjusted. Untested items are the key information: what appears in the report was tested, and what does not appear may not have been. Where the standard has ten items and the report covers six, ask about the other four.

Fourth: measured data. Look for actual values, since a report stating only conformity carries limited information. Look at how far values sit from the limits, since items sitting right at the limit may fail with batch variation; that is far more informative than the word conforms. Look at test conditions, particularly for range and gradient, where conditions change results greatly. And look for correspondence with marketing material, checking whether brochure figures appear in the report. Distance from the limit is what experienced buyers examine: two products both conform, but one shows deformation after fatigue testing at thirty per cent of the limit and the other at ninety, and their real durability differs considerably.

Fifth: accreditation. The accreditation mark and number, which reports normally carry. The scope of accreditation, and whether it covers the items performed; scopes are publicly verifiable, and items outside scope may not be accepted even from the same organisation. And signature by an authorised signatory. Scope deserves checking: an accreditation mark on a report does not mean every item within it falls inside the scope, and reports normally annotate items that do not, so watch for such annotations.

Easily overlooked information. Whether flammability data exist for upholstery and cushions, which many reports omit. Whether biocompatibility data exist for skin-contacting components. Whether battery safety and transport documentation exists, for powered chairs. Whether instructions accompany the reports, and whether their parameters correspond. And whether accessories such as optional cushions and belts have their own data. These distinguish well-prepared suppliers in procurement comparison: a supplier providing mechanical performance reports alone, without flammability and biocompatibility data, has incomplete documentation.

Judging differences from reports. Comparing suppliers, reports can offer direct comparison of performance data, provided test conditions match; comparison of margin to the limits; comparison of test coverage, showing who tested more completely; the presence or absence of durability data, since post-durability re-measurement gives long-term performance a factual basis; and the level of detail, which reflects how seriously the supplier takes quality. Post-durability data is an effective discriminator: most products offer new-product data only, and a product offering data after durability testing supports judgements about long-term use far better.

How we handle it. Our reports include complete test conditions, measured data, equipment information and sample description as standard, with items outside our accreditation scope clearly annotated. That information is what makes a report usable. For buyers needing verification we support authenticity checks: give us a report number and we can check it against our issuing records.
